Treatments and the Importance of Clinical Trials

The third Let’s Learn webinar from Let’s Win and the National Alliance for Hispanic Health’s Nuestras Voces program focused on treatments and the importance of clinical trials for pancreatic cancer patients.

It was held on Wednesday, November 8th. The webinar features oncologist Dr. Allyson J. Ocean and oncologist and entrepreneur Dr. Arturo Loaiza-Bonilla, discussing the treatments for pancreatic cancer, the importance of participating in clinical trials, and why diverse participants are so important. The moderator is health advocate Daniel G Garza.

About 64,000 people are found to have pancreatic cancer each year in the U.S., with a slightly higher rate of occurrence in Black Americans. The five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is about 12 percent, in part because the disease is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. The most effective treatment is surgery but because many patients are diagnosed when the disease has spread beyond the pancreas, surgery is not an option.

Clinical trials are an important avenue for developing better treatments, but recruiting diverse participants is vital to the accurate understanding of whether a new drug or protocol works for everyone.
